What the Eenadu report actually says
The linked article was published on 28 October 2026 at 06:49 IST. Its current headline and body concern the Virtual Queue booking release, even though the URL contains older wording about the temple opening. Treat the publication date and the article body as the reference, rather than reading the URL as an announcement that the shrine opens today.
Its key booking claim is corroborated by Malayala Manorama’s report dated 26 October. That agreement is useful evidence of what has been announced through the news, but it is not the same as our inspecting a current Devaswom Board release or the portal’s live inventory. This post therefore identifies the release time and quotas as reported information.
What is verified for January 2027?
The Government of Kerala’s Department of Tourism lists Makaravilakku on 14 January 2027 in its Digital Event Calendar 2026–27, on printed page 81. This establishes an official calendar reference for the festival day. It does not establish the temple’s full January opening period, daily worship hours, queue reporting times or last day of public darshan.
For a January journey, separate three decisions: the festival date, the darshan date actually offered to you, and the travel connections needed to reach and leave the pilgrimage area. The festival listing is a planning anchor, while your booking and current temple instructions determine the visit you can actually undertake.
Will January slots open on 29 October?
We have not verified that. The news reports describe the Mandala–Makaravilakku season, but that description alone does not prove that the entire January inventory—including 14 January—is included in one release. It also does not establish how later batches, route choices or special-day restrictions will be handled.
On the official portal, check the available date range before treating this release as your January booking opportunity. If January is not selectable, look for a dated official announcement explaining the next release. Do not infer that the date is sold out, that the shrine is closed, or that an agent can obtain it merely because it is absent from your first search.
Reported daily booking allocations
The figures below summarize the news reports checked on 28 October. They describe reported daily allocations, not remaining seats, a live availability feed or a promise that a forest route is open on a particular day. Check the current official directions before choosing a route.
| Approach | Reported online allocation per day | Verification status |
|---|---|---|
| Nilakkal–Pamba | 60,000 | Corroborated news reports |
| Erumeli forest route | 3,000 | Corroborated news reports |
| Vandiperiyar–Sathram | 3,000 | Corroborated news reports |
Booking fees, donations and spot booking
The checked news reports describe Virtual Queue booking as free, with donations optional. Verify the terms displayed by the official portal before confirming, and distinguish a queue reservation from separate purchases such as transport, accommodation or offerings. This website neither takes payments nor issues passes.
Manorama also reports spot-booking arrangements away from Pamba and the removal of the Pamba counter. We have not retrieved the underlying current order, so do not travel to Pamba assuming you can obtain a pass there. Ask the official authorities about the appropriate counter and current arrangements before relying on any spot-booking option.
What a January pilgrim can prepare now
Agree on the observance and intended route with your Guruswamy. Keep identity details and any documents the portal currently requires ready, but enter them only on the official service. For a group, confirm each person’s intended date and route instead of assuming everyone can be included in one transaction.
Review the outward connection, the approach to Pamba and the return journey as separate stages. Leave room for rest, queue movement and changing access instructions. A reported quota is not a useful basis for estimating how long your own darshan will take. Prefer travel arrangements that can accommodate the booking you actually receive.
After reserving, save the issued confirmation offline, check names and reporting instructions, and share the group’s meeting points. If your visit is near the festival day, recheck official traffic, forest and crowd-management notices before departure. Do not use an old itinerary as permission to enter a restricted route.
Makaravilakku and Makara Jyothi: use the terms carefully
Makaravilakku is the festival name used in the official calendar. Makara Jyothi or Makarajyothi is also widely used in devotional discussion of the occasion. Kerala Tourism’s festival background distinguishes the Makara star from the ceremonial light associated with Ponnambalamedu. The terms should not be used to invent two separately bookable events.
This planning post does not promise a viewing location, an exact sighting time or access to Ponnambalamedu. Temple and forest permissions govern movement. A festival date is not permission to leave a marked route or enter a restricted area.
What needs to be checked next?
The next editorial check should take place after the reported release time on 29 October: establish whether booking has actually opened, record which visit dates are offered, and look for a directly accessible official release. That check has not yet happened in this edition. The page does not automatically monitor the portal or refresh its claims.
We will change the verification label only when new evidence supports it and record a meaningful correction below. Until then, this is a dated planning advisory—not a live booking bulletin. Use the permanent booking guide for the general process and the current official portal for the actual reservation.
Sources and verification record
Last verified against the identified publications on 28 October 2026. This means those publications were checked; it does not mean every reported claim has official confirmation. No live reservation inventory was inspected, and no practitioner review is claimed.
