Hariharaputra and Manikanta

In this narrative, the child of Shiva and Mohini is found by King Rajasekhara of Pandalam. A bell at the child’s neck gives rise to the name Manikanta. The king raises him in the royal household.

Mahishi and the return to Pandalam

The familiar account connects Manikanta’s forest journey with the defeat of Mahishi and his return accompanied by tigers. This reveals his divine nature to the royal household. Retellings differ in their details; they should be read as sacred narrative rather than a dated historical chronicle.

Choosing the sacred abode

The narrative culminates in Ayyappa identifying the hill of Sabarimala as his abode. Read the temple’s history separately to understand the later physical shrine and the development of the pilgrimage.
