Saranagati — taking refuge
The repeated invocation of Swamy is a way to return attention to devotion. Use it alongside patient conduct and consideration for others; prayer and behaviour belong together.
Seeing a fellow pilgrim as Swami
Addressing fellow devotees as Swami invites respect across differences of status and background. Share space, food and assistance with humility, particularly when the journey is tiring.
Tat Tvam Asi
Often rendered “Thou art That,” Tat Tvam Asi is associated with Sabarimala’s spiritual outlook. It invites reflection on the relationship between the self and the divine. It should not be used to claim that completing a particular number of journeys automatically proves spiritual attainment.
Practise at home as well as on the hill
Restraint in speech, simple living, keeping commitments and caring for others are practical ways to carry the observance forward. The return home is part of the journey.
